Whipping up a batch of homemade peanut butter is simple. With just a few ingredients and a little prep work, you can create gourmet peanut butter that puts jarred brands to shame.

Follow this easy step-by-step guide to make nutritious, velvety smooth peanut butter at home from start to finish.

  • 2 cups raw peanuts
  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt (optional)

For seasoned peanut butter, you can also add:

  • 1-2 Tbsp honey, maple syrup or agave for sweetness
  • 1 tsp cinnamon, nutmeg or vanilla for extra flavor

That’s it! Avoid peanut oil or other additives which can make peanut butter oily or gritty.

  • Food processor or high-speed blender like Vitamix
  • Rubber spatula
  • Glass jar or container for storing

A food processor or powerful blender is key. I don’t recommend using a standard blender, as it likely won’t achieve the silky texture homemade peanut butter requires.

Step 1: Prep the Peanuts

Start by removing any shells or debris from 2 cups raw, unsalted peanuts. Rinse and drain them well.

Place the wet peanuts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Toast at 350°F for 12-15 minutes until lightly browned and fragrant.

Toasting deepens the peanut flavor and makes blending easier.

Cool the toasted peanuts before using. The peanuts can also be roasted in advance and stored in an airtight container for 2-3 days.

Step 2: Blend the Peanuts

Add the cooled, toasted peanuts to your food processor. Begin processing on low speed.

Let it run for 3-4 minutes, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed. You’ll soon hear a smooth consistency.

Step 3: Emulsify the Peanut Oil

This is the key step to ultrasmooth peanut butter.

After 3-4 minutes of blending, the peanuts will become a coarse meal. With the processor running, slowly stream in 1 tablespoon of peanut oil if you have it on hand. If not, any neutral oil works.

Adding a touch of oil emulsifies the natural peanut oils and gives peanut butter its trademark creaminess.

Step 4: Finish Blending

Let the processor run for 2-3 more minutes. Stop to scrape down the sides every 30 seconds or so.

The peanut oil will fully incorporate, and the puree will become perfectly smooth and glossy.

Taste and add a pinch of salt if desired. For sweet peanut butter, add 1 tablespoon honey, agave or maple syrup. Or sprinkle in cinnamon, vanilla or other spices now.

Step 5: Transfer to Storage Jar

Scoop your fresh peanut butter into a clean glass jar. Smooth the top with a spatula.

Place plastic wrap directly on the surface of the peanut butter to prevent oxidation. Screw the lid on tightly.

Homemade peanut butter retains its flavor and texture best when stored properly:

  • Store at room temperature for up to 1 month. For longer shelf life, refrigerate.
  • Prevent dryness by topping with plastic wrap before sealing the lid.
  • If oil separation occurs, stir before use.
  • For crunchy style, stir in peanuts pieces when almost done blending.
  • For flavor twists, add nutella, honey, cinnamon, crushed nuts or seeds.

With the steps above, you can whip up a perfect batch of peanut butter in under 15 minutes active time.
